5 Star Goodreads Review
Apr 02, 2017Lisa Morin rated it ***** it was amazingit was amazingShelves: netgalley
I was extremely impressed with this book. I have never come across a cozy mystery that involves dowsing rods. I was really curious about this so I was excited to give this book a try.
Julie Hall is an intense character that has truly overcome evil in her life. Raised by a grandmother who hated her and a grandfather who was caught in the middle, Julie could not wait to leave her home.
After the death of her grandmother, Julie returns home to her grandfather, living her life quietly in a tiny trailer.
When FBI agent Garrett Pierce asks Julie to help in a missing persons case, Julie feels torn, she wants to help but she doesn't want to become the reason for small town gossip.
Julie needs to make some decisions and only the right one will help save her life.
I was so intrigued with this story that I could not put it down. I read it all the way through and was totally impressed with the style of writing and the entire story itself.
I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.

A Kirkus Review!
KIRKUS:
Is it a gift or a curse that Julie Hall has the ability to divine the whereabouts of dead bodies?
Twenty-five-year-old Hall (real name: Delma Arensault) lives an ordinary life. She resides with her dog, Wookie, in a trailer down the ways from her beloved widowed grandfather. She’s employed at a gas station. She has a boyfriend, an unfulfilled artist who works at the local casino. But she has an extraordinary gift. Readers have heard the expression so-and-so “knows where all the bodies are buried.” That’s Hall: “The first time I picked up dowsing rods I knew I was different. Gramps said that if you had the knack, they’d help you find water. But I always found bodies.” That’s the crackerjack opening to Roberts’ (Drop Dead Beauty, 2013, etc.) compact paranormal mystery in which Hall is recruited by FBI agent Garrett Pierce to help locate three missing girls who are presumed dead. Hall’s gift is the only miraculous thing in her life. She is haunted by the childhood abuse she received at the hands of her grandmother, which brings on “quicksand thoughts” that mire her in “the dark place.” When a childhood friend betrays her and her supernatural secret goes public, she not only becomes a target of the press (“Can you confirm that your supernatural black magic is what helped the FBI?”), but also of the killer, who is still at large. Readers who pat themselves on the back for being able to anticipate twists may find themselves one-upped here. Roberts imbues Hall with a likable pluck and grit. She has a deft, witty touch. Hall refers to a reporter who asks her if she is “a good witch or a bad witch” as “a particularly stupid woman with a death wish.” ... there is genuine suspense as the danger hits close to home, and Hall and Pierce make for an arresting team.
Readers of this taut mystery don’t need dowsing rods to detect series potential.

A Great Review from Romantic Times!
Mystery/suspense
A GRAVE CALLING
Wendy Roberts
4 stars
An enjoyable
read that combines crime-solving with the paranormal element of dowsing rods
and pendulums. The female lead, self-healing from her tortured childhood, is a
strong, likeable character that easily pulls the reader along for the ride in
her search for the missing victims. There are parts that seem to be predictable
but a surprising twist towards the end knocks that assumption out of the park
and seals A Grave Calling as one page-turner of a book.
SUMMARY:
Julie Hall is a simple twenty-five year old working at a gasoline station and
living in a trailer set on her grandfather's land. She also has an unwanted
knack for finding dead bodies with the help of her dowsing rods. FBI Special
Agent Garrett Pierce heads the team investigating the disappearance of teenage
girls in the area, whose bodies they have yet to discover. Julie and her
dowsing rods are his last resort in finding the bodies and ultimately, the
killer. (CARINA PRESS, Jun., 463 pp., $3.99)
